Pacific salmon undertake anadromous migrations - meaning they reproduce in freshwater, but spend their adult life in oceans, where they accumulate more than 99 percent of their weight. Female salmon can lay between 1500 and 10000 eggs with only about 1% of these surviving into adults. On average, two adults per spawning pair are produced.
