Scientists have come up with multiple explanations for why zebras have their stripes. Theories have ranged from camouflage to throw off predators, pest control (biting flies have been found to avoid striped patterns), to ways of signaling other members of their species or to regulate body temperature.
Zebras have never been domesticated, due to their unpredictable nature and tendency to attack people. However, they have been successfully hybridized with other equines since at least the 19th century. Such hybrids include zedonks, zorses, and zonies.
